Tribes in Wisconsin want to go off the reservation

Several tribes in Wisconsin are seeking to build casinos off the reservation, including two attempts to go out of the state.

The Menominee Nation, the St. Croix and Bad River bands of Ojibwe, the Ho-Chunk Nation, the Oneida Nation and the Stockbridge Munsee Band of Mohicans have proposals for off-reservation casinos. The latter two tribes are seeking casinos in New York as part of a land claim settlement.

All the tribes face long odds in their quest to gain off-reservation. Opposition can come from other tribes, state officials, local governments and non-Indian gaming operators. Three Ojibwe tribes already saw their off-reservation casno rejected by the state.

The Forest County Potawatomi Tribe opened the first off-reservation casino in the state. The casino, outside of Milwaukee, reportedly generates $328 million a year.
