Out-of-state gaming deal an issue in Mohegan election

Members of the Mohegan Tribe of Connecticut say the tribe's recent purchase of an out-of-state racetrack was a factor in a recent election that saw the ouster of several incumbents.

Critics say they learned about the $280 million purchase of the Pocono Downs when it appeared in the newspaper. Along with other costs associated with bringing slot machines to the track, the deal will bring the tribe's debt to $1.5 billion, The New London Day reported.

Some also say they didn't know the tribe was helping the Menominee Nation of Wisconsin and the Cowlitz Tribe of Washington with gaming deals until reading about them in the paper.
