Sen. George Voinovich (R-Ohio) said on Tuesday that he wants to put "another nail in the coffin" of Indian gaming.
Voinovich is sponsoring S.1518, a bill that would bar tribes from operating Class III casinos in states where "commercial" gambling is illegal. In Ohio, only horse tracks, pari-mutuel betting and charity casino nights are allowed.
Voinovich said his bill won't be a major change in law. But it appears to overwrite a court decision won by the Northern Arapaho Tribe of Wyoming. The 10th Circuit Court of Appeals found that the tribe is entitled to the "full gamut" of Class III gaming because the state allowed it for social or charity purposes.
Voinovich said he hoped to attach his measure to another bill. He appeared at a press conference with Sen. Mike DeWine (R-Ohio), who also wants to stop the spread of Indian gaming.
