DOJ backs proposed California casino in court

The Department of Justice filed a brief on Friday supporting a proposed casino by the Buena Vista Band of the Me-Wuk Indians in California.

The brief cited the National Indian Gaming Commission's recent opinion in favor of the tribe. The agency's acting general counsel said the rancheria qualifies for gaming under the Indian Gaming Regulatory Act.

Amador County disagrees. The county filed a lawsuit to block a casino on the 67-acre rancheria.
