Downtown Oklahoma City casino debated

The Shawnee Tribe of Oklahoma won't ignore community concerns over a proposed casino in downtown Oklahoma City, a tribal official said.

The tribe met recently with Mayor Mick Cornett to discuss the idea. But Cornett said he already opposes it.

Merchants in Bricktown, the area where the casino would be located, also have voiced concerns. Some are keeping an open mind but others say it will be a bad idea.

The tribe was recognized by an act of Congress in 2000. The act gives the tribe the right to acquire trust lands almost anywhere in the state.
