County wants taxes from businesses at casinos

Riverside County in California is hoping to collect property taxes from business operating at tribal casinos.

The county claims it has the authority to tax private businesses on tribal land. Officials plan to send out tax bills but are waiting for input from the state Board of Equalization, which calls the county's attempt to collect the taxes a first in the state.

San Diego County recently lost an attempt to impose taxes on a hotel at a tribal casino. A federal judge ruled last month that the tax was unlawful because it was not authorized by Congress.
