Gaming changes way of life for Wisconsin Oneidas

Two hundred years and seven generations after being forced to leave their homelands in New York, the Oneida Nation of Wisconsin is thriving thanks to gaming revenues.

With five casinos in northeastern Wisconsin, gaming has enabled the tribe to buy land, provide services for tribal members and create jobs. The tribe doesn't release figures but profits run in the millions.

The role gaming will play in the tribe's future is debating among the membership. Some believe the tribe's proposed land and casino deal in New York goes too far. A deal is pending with the state in light of recent court decisions that went against tribal land claims.

The tribe will be going to the polls this Saturday to fill nine seats of the business committee. A top issue in the election is the settlement for the land claim.
