Passamaquoddy Tribe seeks support for racino bid

The Passamaquoddy Tribe of Maine is gathering support for its proposal to build a race track with slot machines.

The tribe proposed the racino after state voters authorized slot machines at non-Indian tracks. But Gov. John Baldacci (D) vetoed the tribe's bill and there weren't enough votes to override it.

The tribe is now turning to other tribes for help in advance of a statewide voter referendum. The United South and Eastern Tribes (USET), which is meeting in Connecticut this week, has pledged support.

A group called Washington County Tribal Track is running ads and raising money for the ballot proposal.
