Ohio senator withdraws Indian gaming rider

Sen. George Voinovich (R-Ohio) introduced but later withdrew an appropriations rider that would have barred tribes from obtaining land for gaming without the approval of a state's governor.

Voinovich offered the rider as part of the 2006 Interior appropriations bill. He said it was necessary to stop the Eastern Shawnee Tribe of Oklahoma from opening casinos in his state. The tribe is eyeing several sites and has filed a land claim in hopes of negotiating a gaming compact.

Voinovich withdrew the rider, saying Sen. John McCain (R-Arizona) promised to hold a Senate Indian Affairs Committee hearing on such gaming proposals.
