Opponents of tribal gaming accused of racism

Opponents of tribal gaming in Maine are being accused of racism by representatives of the Penobscot Nation and the Passamaquoddy Tribe.

The tribes are seeking passage of a bill to allow them to open a racetrack with slot machines. Voters legalized slot machines last year.

But some lawmakers, Gov. John Baldacci (R) and anti-gaming groups are fighting the projects. Tribal representatives say the opposition is based on racism and misinformation.
