Editorial: Governor should reject slots for tribe

"Gov. Baldacci's statement that he is inclined to veto a bill that would let the Passamaquoddy Indian tribe create a casino-style gambling facility in Washington County is welcome news.

While the governor has often said he opposes the expansion of gambling in Maine, he had not ventured an opinion on this proposal, which the Legislature's Legal and Veterans Affairs Committee approved by a 9-1 margin.

It's true that eastern Maine's economy is far from being the state's most prosperous, but there are several reasons why the idea of creating what would become the state's second 1,500-slot casino is a bad one."
