Casino cash lands in hands of key lawmakers

Republicans and Democrats on a key Minnesota House committee received more than $12,000 in campaign contributions last year from gaming interests, The Minneapolis Star Tribune reports.

Republicans on the House Taxes Committee received $5,150, mostly from Canterbury Park and its lobbyists. Canterbury is seeking approval to add slot machines to an existing racetrack near the Shakopee Mdewakanton Sioux Community.

Democrats on the other hand received $6,950. Most of it came from tribes with existing casinos that would be affected by the racino a proposed off-reservation tribal-state casino.

The committee is set to vote on legislation for the racino-casino plan even though two of the three tribes associated with the casino have withdrawn.
