A privately-held company called Kansans for Economic Growth is promoting the latest proposal for an off-reservation casino in Kansas.
The company previously sought approval of a state-owned casino but the bill didn't make it through the Legislature. So backers turned to the Prairie Band Potawatomi Nation, Kickapoo Tribe, and Sac and Fox Nation in seeking a casino in the southeast part of the state near Oklahoma and Missouri.
The group says a tribal casino might be more likely to win approval. The Kickapoo Tribe and Sac and Fox Nation have previously signed a compact for an off-reservation casino in the Kansas City area, although the deal was not approved by lawmakers.
Separately, the Iowa Tribe is proposing an off-reservation casino near Wichita. Kansans for Economic Growth hopes to bring the Iowas on board with the latest plan.
