Maine tribes seek permission for slot machines

Two bills that have been introduced in the Maine Legislature would allow tribes to offer slot machines.

One bill allows the Passamaquoddy Tribe of Maine to offer as many as 3,000 slot machines at a racetrack. A second bill allows tribes to operate as many as 1,500 machines at high-stakes bingo halls.

The Passamaquoddy Tribe and the Penobscot Nation sought voter approval last fall for a full-fledged casino. The effort failed by nearly 2-1 but voters approved slot machines at racetracks.
