Oneida Nation leader blasts off-reservation deals

Keller George, an Oneida Nation leader and president of the United South and Eastern Tribes blasted, attempts by out-of-state tribes to open casinos in New York at a hearing on Tuesday.

George said non-Indian developers linked to Gov. George Pataki (R) lured tribes into shady deals to open casinos in the Catskills. In his testimony [PDF] he targeted the Stockbridge-Munsee Band of Mohicans from Wisconsin and the Seneca-Cayuga Tribe of Oklahoma. The Wisconsin Oneidas were not mentioned.

George's testimony and questions posed by state Assembly Democrats prompted Robert Berman, the CEO of a gaming company with two Catskills deals, to criticize the focus on lobbyists.
