Wisconsin tribe may withhold $40.5M payment to state

The Forest County Potawatomi Tribe is considering withholding a $40.5 million compact payment to the state.

The tribe promised the money under a compact signed with Gov. Jim Doyle (D). But a legal challenge from Republicans and racetracks has put the deal -- and the tribe's expansion plans -- in limbo.

As a result, the tribe isn't seeing revenues it expected from a larger casino. The Ho-Chunk Nation has already withheld a $30 million payment. The two tribes formed the bulk of the money Doyle wanted from tribal casinos.
