Unrecognized tribe wants share of Rhode Island track

An unrecognized tribe whose land claim has been rejected in the courts is claiming ownership of Rhode Island's only racetrack.

The leader of the Seaconke Wampanoag Tribe says the Lincoln Park track is located on aboriginal territory. Chief Sachem Wilfred "Eagle Heart" Green says the state should partner with the tribe to make the track into a major casino.

Gov. Donald Carcieri (R) rejected the offer, referring to dismissal of the tribe's land claim by the 1st Circuit Court of Appeals. The tribe is hoping for reconsideration by the court.
