California tribes oppose off-reservation casino

The California Nations Indian Gaming Association, the state's largest inter-tribal organization, has taken a stand against an off-reservation casino in the Bay Area.

The Lytton Band of Pomo Indians signed a compact with Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger (R) to turn a card club into a Class III casino. CNIGA says deal poses a threat to all tribes.

Lytton Band Chairwoman Margie Mejia was hurt by the opposition. "It's a very sad day in Indian Country when tribes come out and oppose each other -- and don't stand united," she was quoted as saying.

The tribe is due to unveil a "scaled-down" proposal today. The original plan for up to 5,000 slot machines was universally panned.
