Coburn says gaming not good for tribes or state

Sen. Tom Coburn (R-Oklahoma), a new member of the Senate Indian Affairs Committee, met with leaders of Oklahoma's Five Civilized Tribes last week, saying he opposes gaming but will work with tribes on their issues.

"I was very explicit in my objections to gaming issues," Coburn told The Oklahoman. "I don't think it's good for the tribes or for the state ... I was very up front with them. I understand they have the right to do it."

Coburn met with leaders of the Cherokee, Choctaw, Chickasaw, Seminole and Creek tribes. Cherokee Nation Chief Chad Smith said the meeting was "positive and constructive."
