Texas lawmaker to introduce casino, slot machine bills

A Texas state lawmaker who has accepted money from the Alabama-Coushatta Tribe is filing a series of bills to legalize casinos at South Padre Island and allow slot machines at certain facilities.

Rep. Ismael “Kino” Flores, a Democrat, says he is proposing the bills to help fund public education. Proceeds from gambling would go to a variety of education projects.

If approved, the bills would allow tribes in the state to operate slot machines and other Class III machines. The Alabama-Coushatta Tribe and the Tigua Tribe were forced to shut down their casinos when the state objected.
