Revenues at charity bingos in California have dropped dramatically and some people are blaming tribal casinos.
The Ride to Walk charity in Placer County used to take in as much as $150,000 in bingo proceeds a year. But after the United Auburn Indian Community opened a casino, the charity started losing money. In Sacramento County, charity bingo proceeds have dropped 31 percent in the last dozen years.
To fill the gap, the United Auburn Indian Community and the nearby Rumsey Band of Wintun Indians have donated millions to charities in Placer County. Tribes elsewhere in the state also donate million to nonprofits and charities.
