California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger (R) says the casino proposed by the Big Sandy Band of Mono Indians is not located on Indian lands.
The tribe wants to build a casino on non-reservation land in Fresno County. Although local officials appear to be supportive, the tribe needs to negotiate a compact with Schwarzenegger.
The casino would be located near the existing casino owned by the Table Mountain Rancheria, which claims jurisdiction over the land in question. The National Indian Gaming Commission is considering the dispute and is expected to issue a ruling by the end of the year.
