Officials in Oneida County, New York, will begin enforcing the state's ban on smoking in public places at the Oneida Nation's casino, The Syracuse Post-Standard reports.
County officials the U.S. Supreme Court's recent decision in the Sherill v. Oneida Nation case gives them authority over land that is not held in trust. The Turning Stone Resort and Casino. is allegedly on fee land.
A lawsuit had been filed by Upstate Citizens for Equality, an anti-land claims group, to enforce the smoking law on the tribe. On Thursday, a state Supreme Court Justice postponed the case to await the county's actions.
