Miccosukee Tribe asks Gov. Bush to negotiate

The Miccosukee Tribe is asking Florida Gov. Jeb Bush (R) to negotiate a Class III gaming compact.

In a letter, the tribe's general counsel said a voter initiative approved last November paves the way for slot machines. Although two counties have yet to legalize the machines, the tribe says it is entitled to them.

A top official in the state attorney general's office agrees. But Bush hasn't responded to the request.

The Seminole Tribe tried to negotiate a Class III compact but the state refused. The impasse led to an historic U.S. Supreme Court decision that said states can't be sued if they won't negotiate. Tribal leaders have called on Congress to overturn the decision.
