Report faults state for regulation of gaming

The state of Minnesota does a poor job of regulating the gaming industry, the Office of the Legislative Auditor said in a report on Tuesday.

The report [Gambling Regulation and Oversight] examined the practices of the Department of Public Safety, which regulates tribal and non-tribal gaming. It said the department isn't using all of the resources available to determine whether tribal casinos are in compliance with the law.

"In addition," the report said the department's "policy of assigning sworn law enforcement officers to tribal gaming matters on a part-time basis has hindered casino oversight."

The report found more serious problems with the charitable gaming industry. It said the non-profits are spending more than 55 percent of gaming profits on expenses. For every dollar gambled, only four cents actually went to charities.
