About 175 people attended a public hearing on the Nottawaseppi Huron Band of Potawatomi's proposed casino in Michigan.
Supporters and opponents of the project attended the meeting. Some voiced concerns about traffic and crime that may be caused by the casino, The Battle Creek Enquirer reported.
The tribe is in the process of acquiring 79 acres for the casino. Since the tribe is recently recognized, the land qualifies for an exception under the Indian Gaming Regulatory Act [NIGC Memo].
The Bureau of Indian Affairs is taking comments for 45 days on the draft environmental impact statement. A final statement will be prepared before the land is taken into trust.
