The Lower Lake Rancheria Koi Nation has dropped its plans for an off-reservation casino near the Oakland International Airport, the tribe's development partner announced on Friday.
The tribe hasn't commented publicly on the decision but local officials took credit for defeating the proposal. The casino generated significant controversy since being announced several months ago.
The tiny tribe was placed back on the list of federally recognized entities in one of the final actions of former assistant secretary Kevin Gover, who then went to work for the tribe as a consultant.
The tribe has since hired the Holland & Knight firm and former principal deputy assistant secretary Aurene Martin to lobby its case in Washington. Martin served in the Bush administration.
