Voters in Calexico, California, approved a ballot referendum on Tuesday that calls on the city to negotiate an off-reservation casino with the Manzanita Band of Kumeyaay Indians.
Measure N was approved with 56 percent of the vote. "We're pretty happy about it," tribal council member John Elliott told The San Diego Union-Tribune.
The tribe is partnering with the Viejas Band on the proposed $175 million casino. A site has not been chosen yet.
After the deal with the city is negotiated, the tribe needs a compact with the state and approval from the Bureau of Indian Affairs to acquire land for gaming purposes.
