An effort has been launched to ask voters in Barstow, California, to approve an off-reservation casino.
Manuel Gurule, a former city council member, started a petition to get the issue on the November ballot. He says an off-reservation casino will create at least 2,800 jobs and generate about $5 million every year for the city.
At least three tribes are interested in Barstow, located on a major interstate. The Los Coyotes Band of Mission Indians, the Chemehuevi Tribe and the Big Lagoon Rancheria have made casino proposals.
