Narragansett Tribe offered $10M in gaming deal

Rhode Island Gov. Donald Carcieri (R) is offering the Narragansett Tribe $10 million a year as part of a deal to allow more video slot machines at a non-Indian race track.

Narragansett Chief Sachem Matthew said he appreciated the offer but said the tribe still wants to develop its own casino. He told The Providence Journal that "we are looking for self-sufficiency."

The tribe has been trying for years to open a casino but needs state voter approval because it is barred from the Indian Gaming Regulatory Act. The state Supreme Court has agreed to hold a hearing in August to decide the constitutionality of a proposed tribal casino.
