The Lytton Band of Pomo Indians is not worried about Sen. John McCain's call for a hearing on off-reservation gaming, a tribal spokesperson said.
The tribe obtained 9.5 acres in the Bay Area through an appropriations rider. The language backdated the acquisition prior to the passage of the Indian Gaming Regulatory Act, freeing the tribe from the lengthy review process for off-reservation casinos.
McCain, the new chairman of the Senate Indian Affairs Committee, called the process wrong and said he would hold hearings on a bill that would force the tribe to seek state and local approval. The tribe already has the support of Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger (R), who signed a compact for the casino.
