Tribe's casino leads to big jump in traffic accidents

Traffic accidents have increased 92 percent since the United Auburn Indian Community opened its casino in June 2003, the California Highway Patrol reported.

CHP also reported a 600 percent increase in arrests for driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs. "We told you so," said a critic of the casino.

But traffic accidents and DUI incidents have decreased in the past five months, CHP said. The tribe pays $530,000 annually to the local sheriff's department, provides for a designated driver service, contributes to problem gambling programs and reimburses CHP for extra traffic coverage.
