Oneida Nation approves land claim for casino deal

Members of the Oneida Nation of Wisconsin overwhelmingly approved the tribe's land claim for casino settlement.

The tribe agreed to drop its claim to 250,000 acres of land in New York in exchange for a casino in the Catskills. The tribe would also get 1,000 acres in New York and certain hunting and fishing rights.

The casino, one of five proposed in the Catskills, needs state and federal approval. The tribe will share revenues with the state and collect state taxes on the sale of goods.

New York Gov. George Pataki (R) has reached similar deals with the Cayuga Nation of New York, the Seneca-Cayuga Tribe of Oklahoma and the Stockbridge-Munsee Band of Mohicans from Wisconsin.
