Kansas lawmaker pulls review of urban casino

A compact to authorize the first urban casino in Kansas suffered a setback on Wednesday when a top lawmaker pulled it from consideration.

House Speaker Doug Mays, a Republican, would not allow the Legislative Coordinating Council to vote on the compact. He said the decision should be up to the full Legislature.

Casino supporters and tribal leaders said they were disappointed with Mays' actions. The compact probably won't be considered until January at the earliest.

Gov. Kathleen Sebelius (D) signed the compact with the Kickapoo Tribe and the Sax and Fox Tribe. The tribes will share revenues from the off-reservation casino.
