South Florida slot machine initiative passes

A ballot initiative that could pave the way for slot machines in South Florida has been approved.

Amendment 4 was losing in the polls but absentee and provisional ballots pushed it over the top by 93,000 votes. The amendment allows voters in Broward and Miami-Dade counties to hold referendums to legalize slot machines at racetracks.

The Seminole Tribe campaigned against the measure and spent $6.5 million on the "No on 4" campaign. The tribe owns casinos that operate Class II games. Legalization of slot machines could authorize Class III games.
