Kansas lawmakers seek changes in casino pact

A compact for the first revenue-sharing, urban tribal casino in Kansas hit a snag on Thursday when state lawmakers asked Gov. Kathleen Sebelius (D) to renegotiate the agreement.

The Joint Committee on State-Tribal Affairs voted 5-4 to renegotiate provisions limiting future gaming in the state. The current compact bars new tribal casinos and limits the number of slot machines in and around the Kansas City area.

The committee also asked for tougher audit provisions and "more generous" revenue sharing. The tribes have already agreed to share 12 percent of the first $100 million in revenues and 22 percent after that with the state. With the county, the tribes will share 4.2 percent of the gambling revenues for each of the first seven years and 6.5 percent annually after that.
