Kansas gaming compact bars more tribal casinos

Tribes will not be allowed to open any more casinos in Kansas under a new compact for an urban casino.

Gov. Kathleen Sebelius (D) negotiated the compact with the Kickapoo Tribe and the Sac and Fox Tribe. It sets limits on the amount of gaming allowed in the future.

In addition to barring new tribal casinos, the compact sets a limit of no more than 500 slot machines at a pari-mutuel racetrack. Outside the 100-mile limit, the limit is no more than 1,500 slots at racetracks.

Kansas already has four tribal casinos but tribes, mostly from Oklahoma, are also eyeing the state. But Matt All, chief counsel for Sebelius, said the governor will only negotiate with the Kansas-based tribes.
