Creek Nation council opposes state gaming question

The council of the Muscogee (Creek) Nation voted last night to oppose State Question 712, a ballot initiative that would legalize certain electronic casino machines for tribes and racetracks.

One council member called SQ 712 a "new treaty" that would erode tribal sovereignty. "Ten, 15, 20 years down the road, there will be no Muscogee Nation, no Cherokee Nation, no Osage Nation," council member Cherrah Ouiett was quoted as saying.

The tribe, the third largest in the state, also opposes SQ 713, which would raise cigarette taxes by 55 cents a pack.
