Many Connecticut problem gamblers are poor

A study by the Connecticut Council on Problem Gambling shows that one-third of the callers to its telephone help line made less than $25,000 a year and 16 percent were unemployed.

Slot machines offered at two tribal casinos, followed by lottery scratch tickets and blackjack card games, were the games of choice for callers. The typical problem gambler is about 43 years old, white, Catholic and male.

According to the council, two-thirds of callers earned less than $45,000 a year.
