Hopi Tribe to vote on possible casino in Winslow

The Hopi Tribe of Arizona is holding a voter referendum May 19 on gaming.

Tribal members will be given one option to consider: a casino in Winslow. The tribe has trust land there.

An option to lease the tribe's gaming rights to another tribe was scrapped. Under compacts with the state, the tribe would receive $5,000 a year for every machine leased.

A full-blown casino in Winslow with 900 slot machines could make $24 million annually, according to tribal figures. Leasing would only bring in $4.5 million a year.
