Catawba Nation sues to establish gaming rights

The Catawba Nation of South Carolina filed suit in federal court on Wednesday to reaffirm its gaming rights on the reservation.

The suit asks the court to block state officials from seizing video poker machines. Although such machines are currently banned in the state, the tribe says it has a right to offer them because they were once legal.

The state attorney general, in an opinion, said the tribe has a valid claim. The tribe plans to reintroduce video poker because state officials are blocking a proposal to build a high-stakes bingo hall.
