Ruling expected on tribe's Detroit casino settlement

A federal judge is expected to rule on a settlement to pay a Michigan tribe $79 million for being unconstitutionally denied a chance to bid on three Detroit casinos.

The Lac Vieux Desert Band of Lake Superior Chippewa Indians came to a settlement with the city of Detroit and the operators of two of the casino. A third casino operator is holding out and has objected to the settlement.

The tribe's successful lawsuit threatened to halt casino development in Detroit. Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick says approval of the settlement will clear the way for construction.
