Representatives of six California tribes on Wednesday said they are about a month away from new casino agreements with Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger (R).
According to The Los Angeles Times, the tribes would be allowed to expand their operations on their lands. In exchange, they would finance a bond giving $1 billion to the state.
The tribes involved are the United Auburn Indian Community, the Pala Band of Mission Indians, the Pauma Band of Mission Indians, the Rumsey Band of Wintun Indian and the Viejas Band of Kumeyaay Indians.
A sixth tribe, the Lytton Band of Pomo Indians, is also in talks but does not currently have a casino.
Other tribes discussed renegotiating their compacts but walked away, saying the proposed exchange was too costly.
