Remote Minn. tribes clear a hurdle for urban casino

A Minnesota House committee voted 6-4 on Wednesday to approve an urban casino for two remote Chippewa tribes.

But the proposal will have to go to another committee before heading to a floor vote. Leaders of the White Earth and Red Lake bands of Chippewa said they will work to convince lawmakers of the need for the casino.

The two tribes are based in the northwest part of the state. They operate casinos but not have not seen as many benefits as other tribes.

The tribes hope a casino in the Twin Cities that would bring in $65 million in annual revenues, plus $90 million for the state.
