Cherokee Nation trying to shut down Keetoowah casino

The Cherokee Nation of Oklahoma is trying to shut down the United Keetoowah Band's casino.

Both tribes have separate federal recognition but the Cherokee Nation claims sole jurisdiction in a 14-county area in northeastern Oklahoma. The UKB casino is located in the area, so the Cherokee Nation says it is illegal.

The National Indian Gaming Commission once said the casino was illegal but state officials said they wouldn't shut down the facility. The matter is pending before a state judge.
