Opponents criticize landless tribe's casino plans

A reported 200 people attended a meeting to discuss the Coast Miwok Tribe's request to create an initial reservation in northern California that would include a casino.

The crowd was 2-1 against the casino, The Santa Rosa Press Democrat reported. People said the facility would drain water, pollute the environment and hurt wildlife.

Rep. Lynn Woolsey (D) said through an aide she opposed the development. She has proposed legislation that would strip the Department of Interior of its mandate to acquire land for the tribe, which has no land base.

The National Indian Gaming Commission led the meeting. NIGC is preparing an environmental impact statement.
