Bill to settle Mich. land claim for casino stalled

A bill to settle the Bay Mills Indian Community's land claim for a casino is languishing in the U.S. Congress.

Under S.2986, the tribe would drop its claim to about 100 acres in the Charlotte Beach area of Michigan's Upper Peninsula. The tribe would get land in Port Huron for a casino that some in the community welcome as a way to stimulate development.

The Senate Indian Affairs Committee held a hearing on the bill but it has failed to get a floor vote. At one point, Sen. Harry Reid (D-Nevada) objected.
