Michigan Gov. Jennifer Granholm (D) was surprised when the Michigan Senate last week voted to rescind a compact with the Match-e-be-nash-she-wish Band of Pottawatomi Indians even though she never acted on it.
The tribe has been fighting to open a casino ever since its federal recognition was restored. Local officials and opposition groups have taken the Bureau of Indian Affairs to court over approval of a land-into-trust request.
Granholm believes the tribe has a right to gaming "with or without a compact," a spokesperson said.
