A superior court judge in California has voided a casino-related agreement between the Timbisha Shoshone Tribe and the city of Hesperia.
The agreement covered municipal services the city was to provide to the tribe's proposed casino. The judge ruled that the city violated the law by not preparing an environmental impact report on the casino.
The city is appealing the decision. Some city officials oppose the casino. One supporter, council member Dennis Nowicki, was not re-elected on Tuesday.
The casino is controversial because the tribe's headquarters is hundreds of miles away in Death Valley. Some residents and other tribes say the tribe has no claim in Hesperia.
