Washington tribes see threat in gaming initiative

Washington tribes have joined forces with a broad coalition of interests to oppose I-892, a ballot initiative that would legalize slot machines at card clubs and other establishments.

Tribes currently have an exclusive right to slot machines. They have spent more than $5 million to oppose I-892.

Tribal leaders say the initiative threatens the prosperity that gaming has brought. Casino revenues have paid for new schools and health facilities, and have improved infrastructure on reservations. Unemployment rates have dropped over the years.

I-892 sponsor Tim Eyman says increased revenues from gaming will lower property taxes. Political leaders, churches and other groups oppose it.
